Yesterday was Mother’s Day in many countries. I was thinking about widows. Nobody knows how many widows (not ex female employees) are receiving a pension from their deceased husbands. After having seen 5 of my friends (and heard of various other individuals) not even reaching the 10-year mark in retirement I am wondering how widows are doing. Many women have sacrificed their careers to follow their husbands. Men that passed away have left their spouses with a reduced pension hammered by inflation. Widows often live for a long time (job patterns, age difference, life expectancy). What are the consequences of pensions not adjusted for 15 years plus? How come the practice of adjusting pensions every 5 to 7 years has become unnecessary or impossible? How come countries like France and the US have adjusted social security pensions nearly every year for the last 14 years? Never mind, widows will be ecstatic to know they are receiving a pension from one of the best companies in the world producing consistently good results with a bright economic future. Since the Olympic is close, how about a medal for Schlumberger.
