      Hi!
Living in France, I received partial lump sum payment from 401k. Got 1042S form. (30 % kept by US)
Anybody has expérience where to report this precisely under the french “déclaration d’impôts”.
      thanks and Regards,
      Merci d’avance!

You should not have to pay a dime to the French tax authorities. There is (thank God) a fiscal convention (convention fiscale). You might read the exact terms but if your tax bracket in France is close to 30 %, you should not be liable for double taxation.

      Benoît,

I just saw your posting, I am starting to get my 401K paid yearly. got like you 30% cut for the IRS? which I expected
My question, Did you file a tax return at the end of the year, did you get any moneys back?

      Eric, Hi!
I am a French resident, so I was advised by the local tax office to report the 401k partial lump sum payment on formula #2047 item #6 and on formula #2042 item #1AL. This pushes up the rate of taxation but provides also a tax credit. The formula used for the tax credit is not black and white to me, and since it is pooled with other income from foreign sources, difficult to assess. The filing process remains a hassle, never sure I do it right. I hope this helps.
