Charles Flaum – 28 December 2023

29 Dec, 2023 | Obituary

Charlie Flaum died today in Portland, Oregon. He had been in home hospice care for some time after considerable time in various different advanced therapies to combat his non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Charlie ably and effortlessly straddled the scientific, engineering and field communities in Schlumberger. He has friends in all three domains. His origins and personal histories are equally multiple. He has so many patents granted to him from his Schlumberger career that it could be said he was the father of many of the technologies that we built our careers upon. He started his Schlumberger career as a Wireline field engineer in Oklahoma in 1977, moving to SDR Research in 1980, then across the Atlantic to Paris operations followed by engineering, before returning to US, retiring in 2010 from Sugarland, Texas R&D.
In the past years since he moved from Houston to Portland with his wife Mary, his sporting passion had become competitive dragon boat paddling. Mary has made public this message from the Dragon Boat paddling group Golden Dragons in Portland, on the Willamette River:
Charles Flaum, 74, a longtime member of the Golden Dragons, died today at his home in Fairview. He was a beloved friend to many and always gave selflessly of his time to help others.  He served as treasurer of our organization and every spring donated countless hours to prepare taxes for seniors. He was a powerful paddler who loved racing. He also loved taking his kayak out on Fairview Lake in search of turtles and water fowl. He led many expeditions up the Columbia Slough. Charles was unfailingly courteous and kind.  He had a career that spanned continents and he spoke multiple languages. He was a true renaissance man. He will be missed by all.
