Fred Juon passed away today, 12th February 2021, in Houston, following a short illness.
Many of us will have fond memories of Fred following his 40 years in Schlumberger, starting in 1958 in Venezuela, and working much of career in Latin America ultimately as Wireline SAM Unit VP, before moving to Houston as NAM President and later VP for Industrial Affairs. We were most privileged to have his good company at our last ALLIANCE Reunion in Panama in February 2020.

“Fred has been a great man and a great oilman, dedicated to his family, passionate by his work, in love with his ‘blue company” since he joined, very supportive and a true believer in people, technology and ethical values”

Please leave your thoughts and memories of Fred as comments to this forum post.

Fred has been one of my role models since I met him back in 1985. His example, his motivation, commitment and charm will always be part of my best memories from my 25 years career at Schlumberger.

      Rest in peace

I had the pleasure of working for Fred on a couple of occasions, and he was always the perfect gentleman.

He was a great manager, gave his opinion, but if you disagreed, he left you to manage your way, as long as you produced the results.

As a young manager, I learnt a lot from Fred. He was always superbly organised, and calm as a cucumber, never harassed.

      Rest in peace.

Fred was an excellent friend and quite a value to Schlumberger. I knew Fred for many years in South America. Being Italian he behaved more as a South American. We are loosing his friendship and can only wish his quiet retirement.

It is with great sadness that I come to know the death of Fred Juon, whom I had the opportunity to meet in 1977 while I was a SFE and transferred to Brasil where he was the Division Manager, based in Rio de Janeiro, and received me in his office and invited me for lunch (feijoada, typical Brazilian plate) before I took the plane to Aracaju, city of my assignment.

He was an exceptional person and, afterwards, and met him again a few times, 1979 in Paris during a seminar, 1980 in Kuwait when I was transferred to Iraq and in a few more occasions; always a very charming person.

The last time I saw him was in Panama, exactly one year ago and I had the opportunity to share and remember with him some of our encounters.

My sincerely condolences to all his family.

I briefly met Fred in Rio de Janeiro when I was assigned to Aracaju in Brazil as a field engineer on February 1976. He was then the Division manager. I had a warm and friendly welcome. My heartfelt condolences to the family may he rest in peace.

A very sad news for all who knew Fred. He managed me for many years in Surenco and I greatly admired his elegant command of every situation. He understood better than any how to deal with the clients there, and created a positive work atmosphere for all of us who were privileged to work with him. He epitomized the best of what it was to be part of the “Surenco Mafia” – often misunderstood by those who came from outside (!), but created by a common bond of “doing more with less”. He understood the meaning of, and the need for a strong “esprit de corps”, and knew how to promote it among all who worked with him. I admired his kindness and humanity, which was evident to all who met him. It was always a pleasure to see him from time to time with him in Houston after his retirement and especially enjoyed our time together in Panama. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Here is an picture of him from our Panama trip

So happy to have had the opportunity to spend some time with Fred Juon in Panama in February last year at Alliance Schlumberger meeting. Fred was a towering presence in Schlumberger SAM. I first met him in Argentina while General Counsel for SAM – Latin America and Caribbean. I recall his hospitality and ease to obtain information required to do my job. Later, I worked with Fred in Mexico when we had some serious issues with taxes and potential currency changes in payment of invoices for offshore work. We came up with the brilliant and practical implementation of payment in Balboas because SURENCO was a Panamanian company. The Balboa is the US Dollar and we received our payments rapidly and with even a small uptick as the Mexican Central Bank for some reason considered the Balboa more valuable than the US Dollar. Later, I worked directly with Fred in Caracas when he became SAM General Manager for Latin America and Caribbean. At a time that resources were becoming more limited due to oil price changes, Fred always provided the necessary staff and resources for SAM Legal to do its job. I will always remember him as a gentleman and a reasonable and dedicated manager who gave us the support and encouragement to do our job to the best of our ability. When I left Caracas in 1985, Fred provided an unexpected Fiesta de Despedida at his home with SAM Office Staff. It was a thoughtful and friendly send off from SAM by a respected SAM leader and personality.

THE GREAT “TRUE – BLUE” OILMAN FRED JUON
Glory be to God for your life and we thank God for ALL those lives you touched positively during your years in Schlumberger. You were solid, dependable, amiable, peaceful good character and Truely Blue Oilman.

My opportunity to meet you came in 1986 when I was transferred from EUR/OGY to SAM/TRT as District Manager, and then Division Manager Serge Lenoir brought me to YOU, as the then SAM-VP for formal introduction. You were very receptive, convincing, and frankly a gentleman.

The re-organization of SAM in 1987/88 put TRT as direct report to SAM-VP which led to my more direct contacts with Fred Juon. It was obvious to most of Fred’s direct reports that he was friendly, balanced, transparent and a good listener. He was respected and loved by his subordinates and superiors as evident during his field visits/ trips.
I was privileged in 1988/89 to have Fred visit TRT first with Victor Grijalva (Exec VP) from SL New York to be followed few months later by another visit with Roberto Monti (President Wireline) from Paris. It was obvious to me then that Fred was pleased with my performance and took the decision to give me some visibility hence this high level visitors to TRT.

My wife and I were very happy to see Fred Juon at SLB Alliance Reunion held in Panama in February 2020 and we, like many others, retain very good memory of our relationship with him.

We pray God to give your immediate family the fortitude to bear the loss. You have played your part.
      Rest In Peace. Adieu.

      Yemi & Kate Esan
