      Greetings,

I seem to remember that at one stage SLB owned Heathkit. If anyone has more info on this past venture, would be interested to find out more.

      Many thanks.

Wikipedia gives a fairly comprehensive history of Heathkit at https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heathkit
“… in 1954, Heath was bought by Daystrom Company … absorbed by oilfield service company Schlumberger Limited in 1962, and the Daystrom/Schlumberger days were Heathkit’s most successful… Zenith Radio Company bought Heath Company from Schlumberger in 1979”

I have a really funny story about Schlumberger owning Heathkit. I was maybe 13 years old in 1974, living in Chicago. I built a Heathkit SW-717 shortwave receiver but it needed service, so I looked in the telephone book and noticed a Heathkit/Schlumberger address relatively near my home, possibly on North Avenue, near the famous Oak Street Beach. I was really confused about the name Schlumberger, I thought it was a purely German word, I had no idea about Alsace at the time. I walked over there with my little radio kit in the snow, with cold wet feet. I arrived at sleek glass and steel tower. The doorman had no idea where I wanted to go, and I realized that there was no retail location there, but being 13 I had no idea why it was listed in the phone book. I was confused. I walked back home, but later found the retail location on the far north side, maybe Devon Avenue. I enjoyed the radio then sold it to my friend Andy. He sent me pictures of it, 50 years later! Shortwave radio led me to wave propagation which led me to seismology which led me to Amoco, which led me to Schlumberger. Voila!

By chance I discovered this website, Electronic Engineering Journal.
Several interesting Heathkit articles, also some Radio Shack articles.
It brought back fond memories from the 1970s!.

      Heathkit articles.
