Dick Ghiselin passed away on 2nd March 2022 in Houston TX, aged 83. Dick was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in late 2020 and it progressed rapidly while complicating his other health issues. He died surrounded by his loving and appreciative family.
Following Texas A&M College and a commission in the US Army, Dick joined Schlumberger Well Services in Louisiana in 1965, for a career that lasted 31 years.
David Pinnington writes “I first met Dick in Tokyo around 1986 when we were both coordinating marketing documentation: he was looking after North America, I was responsible for Asia. We hit it off immediately and until recently we visited each other every year in France and in Houston.
“Dick did a great job in Schlumberger NAM, both in his marketing responsibilities and also in keeping track of the many external employee-oriented groups that there are in the US. He joined the ALLIANCE Schlumberger Board in 2017 and was an invaluable member, travelling from Houston to our meetings and making presentations to Members at the AGM.
“Dick had a delightful, always-happy personality. He made friends everywhere he went and he will be greatly missed, especially by me and my neighbours in France. We greatly enjoyed his visits and even if everyone didn’t understand his accent, they certainly enjoyed his infectious laughter and kindness. We shall all miss him.”

I met Dick in about 1985 with David Pinnington, the three of us representing the marketing support function for our respective regions of Schlumberger. We struck up an immediate friendship and collaborated to start making marketing more efficient and effective for Schlumberger. I have not been in touch with Dick recently but have followed his recent battle with Alzheimer’s through updates from our mutual friend, David Pinnington. A sad loss for all who have known Dick. Thoughts and prayers with all his family.

When I was sent to Houston for a technical staff engineer assignment in 1973 I met Dick Ghiselin. Each of the staff had their area of responsibility providing the interface from the field to engineering and manufacturing, and Dick was charged with trucks, offshore units, cables and the like. He was soon elevated to acting Operations Tech manager after the departure of Jim Reinders and became my boss for a time. Our offices were at the old 5000 Gulf Freeway complex. Dick’s office was at the end of a long hallway, and his boss, Carl Buchholz, was at the other end. Any that remember Carl know he was a pretty demanding guy, and from my office along that hallway I would see Dick traveling at power-walk speeds back and forth to Carl’s office several times a day solving the immediate problems of that day.
He went on to other assignments in the field and later back in Houston. Our paths crossed from time to time when he was involved with advertising, media relations and trade shows, endeavors at which he was especially adept. His self-deprecating Aggie jokes could always be counted on to bring a smile and sometimes a groan. I have known a lot of very genuine and professional people in Schlumberger. Somehow the company has been able to attract the best. Of these, Dick was one of the most genuine, professional and honest that I knew. And “true-blue”.
He will be missed by many. Linda and I extend our deepest condolences to his family.

It is with sadness that I hear about the death of Dick Ghislein. I had the opportunity to know him and work with him in 1987 when I was In New York for Wireline and Testing. His professional expertise in Advertising, Product Promotion, Sales and Marketing have been of great help to the team during my marketing job with Schlumberger. With the many people that knew him I share the loss of his kindness and positive personality . Please pass to the family my deepest felt condolences.

I was very sorry to hear of Dick’s passing. We first met in 1981 when he joined me in the Gulf Coast Unit Marketing Dept. His approach to Marketing was innovative and ahead of his time, and his work was much appreciated by everyone.
Our paths diverged after our time in New Orleans but I would run into Dick frequently at Headquarters on The Gulf Freeway. He was always cheerful and positive and really enjoyed his work. All who knew him enjoyed his company.
After Dick left Schlumberger we remained friends and would often meet at Ron’s Pub at the regular OFM. I will miss his dry sense of humor and cheerful personality.Phil Freeman
